The Sword of Night is a Katana that is only found in Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. It’s an excellent weapon for Dexterity builds seeking something fresh, but it’s worth noting that getting it will require you to complete a relatively lengthy quest. If you’re up for it, though, this ranks as one of the best new weapons in the DLC.
Here’s what you need to know about the Sword of Night and where to find it.
Sword of Night stats and features
The Sword of Night has a weight of 6.5 and requires the following stats to wield:
- STR - 10
- DEX - 20
The weapon comes equipped with Ash of War: Witching Hour Slash. This Ash of War infuses your katana with darkness before unleashing a flurry of attacks. These attacks cannot be blocked by enemies or other players. The ability can be charged for additional damage, though you should be careful to time this properly so as not to be caught in the animation during an incoming blow.
The Sword of Night can be upgraded to +10 with Somber Smithing Stones.
Sword of Night item description
The Sword of Night’s item description reads:
“Sword of an all-consuming, bottomless black that devours even the light that shines upon it. Wielded by Jolán, Swordhand of Night.
The blade of the sword is only semicorporeal, and thus cannot be guarded against completely.”
Where to find the Sword of Night
Getting your hands on the Sword of Night won’t come easy, but follow us and we’ll get you there. You’ll need to visit the Cathedral of Manus Metyr in western Scadu Altus where you’ll find an NPC named Count Ymir sat upon a throne. He will send you on a series of quests involving multiple finger ruins throughout the Land of Shadow.
On your first visit with Count Ymir, he’ll grant you a map and a Hole-Laden Necklace. You’ll need to take this to the Finger Ruins of Rhia (reached by way of the Southern Shore region). Once you arrive, approach the bell (finger?) in the center of the ruins to receive the Crimson Seed Talisman +1 as a reward.
Return to Count Ymir after visiting the Finger Ruins of Rhia to receive a new map alongside Beloved Stardust. You’ll have to take this item to the Finger Ruins of Dheo, which is exceedingly well-hidden behind a statue near the Back Gate Site of Grace in Shadow Keep.
Approach the statue in a room next to the Site of Grace and use the “O, Mother” gesture.
This will open a path to the Hinterlands, which leads directly to the Finger Ruins of Dheo. Once again interact with the bell (finger?) in the center of the ruins to receive the Cerulean Seed Talisman +1.
Head back to speak with Count Ymir one more time to receive a final map. Afterward, reset the area by teleporting away from the Cathedral of Manus Metyr and then returning to it. You’ll find that Count Ymir has vanished. However, you can approach the throne and interact with it to lead you down below to the Finger Ruins of Miyr.
At the end of this new area, you’ll face off against the Metyr, Mother of Fingers boss. With adequate levels and enough Scadutree Fragments collected, she’s one of the more straightforward and easy major bosses of the DLC.
When Metyr, Mother of Fingers falls to your might, head back and interact with the throne a second time to spawn the Swordhand of Night Jolan invader. This is a simple NPC fight and doesn’t take long to tackle. However, when she dies, Count Ymir will reappear, so be prepared for another fight.
The Count Ymir, Mother of Fingers boss doesn’t have a ton of HP, so you can beat him down pretty quickly with high damage spells or abilities. The only major concern of the fight is the Fingercreepers he spawns, but you should be able to rid the arena of those with a handful of quick attacks.
When Count Ymir is finally defeated, fast travel away and return a final time to the throne room. Leaned against a pillar near the throne is Jolan. Provided you’ve found the Iris of Grace and/or Iris of Occultation items throughout your journey, you’ll be given the option to give her only one of these.
Choose the Iris of Occultation. When Jolan perishes, you can loot the glowing item she leaves behind to receive the Sword of Night at last.
Note: If you haven’t found an Iris of Occultation yet, one can be easily found by defeating the Lesser Omenkiller in the Fort of Reprimand in Scadu Altus. Alternatively, you can slay a Lesser Ulcerated Spirit in the Shadow Keep’s Church District, though this will require a bit more work.
